Issue inserting collett in hardinge CHNC ll

I have avoided the humiliation as long as I can, its time to swallow my pride and get this resolved. I have a Hardinge CHNC ll and it has bar feeder but it is not connected now, i am attempting to insert a simple 16c collet into spindle but not sure it is seated correctly. I see the alignment pin and it allows the collet to slip in almost flush with the taper, but I think I need to thread it now, but nothing seems to let it turn. I have a collett wrench on it but still nothing. Hitting the collet close button draws it in a little more but still not in far enough to fit the taper. Help! By the way thanks for all the great advice, my new 50 hp phase converter runs the entire shop with ease and this machine too!http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb...es/icon_bs.gif
