I have a lathe project on my desk right now that calls for a lathe drilled 3/8 hole about 8" deep. Only drills we have for it are gun drills.
My shop has had alot of problems trying to gun drill smaller holes in the lathe. I only got through 4 parts before I busted my first drill today.
The manufacture recommends 2545 RMP at 1.5 IPM (~.0006 per rev) I decided to run a little slower at 1000 rpm keeping the .0006 per rev, no dice.
What kind of feeds and speeds are you guys running with smaller gun drills? If I slow down much more it's going to take 2 or more shifts the get these done, and thats going to be boring as hell.
420 Stainless, 1000psi through tool coolant. I do have live tool holders, but they are NOT through spindle.
