How to access the Y-axis motor on a Supermax Max-3?

We have a 1995 Supermax Max-3 VMC with a Fanuc OM that appears to have a bad y-axis encoder. I don't have manuals for the machine, so I don't know exactly where the servo motor is. I have taken off a few covers, and so far, I have not seen any obvious places to access the motor. The x and z axes appear to be belt driven, so the y-axis motor may be underneath the ball screw somewhere.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
