Hey, anyone using this on a mill? If so, are you using the advanced features in custom pockets?("pilot drill","bottom finish", "side finish".

Better Method? Small-ish bore with taper in C180 Copper.

This is an internal feature on a customer part in C180. The sketch is just a simplified area of the entire part for clarity.
The item is run from bar stock and parted when done. I'm removing most of the material with a name brand 14mm brazed carbide drill (because it was handy) then boring the rest with a 3/8" SCLCR boring bar (CCMT insert). I'm taking cautious light and shallow cuts (maybe 0.010"-0.020" DOC and 0.003"/rev ... and just guessing, but maybe 250 SFM or so) because in the past being more aggressive I snapped off the tip of a boring bar after it became wrapped tightly in stringers and jammed at the bottom of the hole.
There are about 100 of them in a batch and this operation is taking close to half the total time. I'm sure this isn't the most optimal way to get it done.
What are some better ways? It has been suggested to me that I step up the boring bar size to 1/2" and push it harder, but that doesn't leave much room for chips to accumulate and/or escape. I'm already looking at getting a solid carbide drill that's on size, and then I don't need to bury the boring bar down the hole. Maybe that's all there is to it?
Thanks for your constructive suggestions.

Tree Journeyman 325 Z Axes Servo Error
Machine was running fine, making parts as usual. Then...I left it sit for 3 weeks and now it has a big problem.
Jog Z down it works - jog Z up and it errors out with "Z Servo Error"
I reset it, Jog the Z up it works - jog Z down it errors out.
This problem is not going away and I'm shut down. I've shut it off and rebooted several times and problem still remains.
Some of my trouble shooting: I swapped the Z and Y cables at the servo card and no change.
I've visually inspected the Z ball screw/nut, no obstructions, screw is oiled good.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What drill for .04" hole .28" deep?
Hi guys,
I'm new to small hole drilling :scratchchin:.
.040" hole, .275" deep, in 6061. Quantity 400 for now. The hole starts .42" down in a pocket close to a wall so I can't just choke up on a standard straight drill bit. That makes me want a 3mm or 1/8" shank bit. I like Harvey for little special tools like this, e.g. BAF0400-C8 3-flute 3mm shank, but they are spendy.
What else is out there?
Thanks, and regards.
Mike

Financed for a machine, which of these would you go with?
Hi Guys!
First... my many thanks to all of you who have helped me from day one when I first entered CNC machining!
You guys are an incredible asset.
So, I am ok with the bank... I know my yardage is capped around 200K.
I'll have to reserve 20K or so for shipping to Alaska, around 20K for 5X software, no matter which I choose, and the rest for the machine.
So, I have narrowed the field to one of these machines, and am ready to pull the trigger.
But first, maybe you could look at these rigs and tell me your thoughts.
Probably best deal:
Mazak Variaxis J500, 2014 150K
Then, this jewel...
DMU50 EVO Deckel Maho, 2002, 69K ( Price so low, it scares me )
And the first one, the one I took to the bank...
Hurco 30 UI 2013 2013 125K
I am thinking Mazak..
All these machines are fully feathered out, have tool setters, probes all the bling.
I am gonna pull the trigger in a couple days.
And, you guys have saved me from myself before.
So, any red flags here?
Any you really like?
Thanks again!
Mark

FANUC Spindle load monitor error alarm generation.
Dear all
I used to work on MORI SEIKI (Fanuc),
there was a function that when a tool finishes its cycle & during whole cycle there was ZERO (0%) load on spindle, machine used to generate alarm "spindle load monitor error".
This function prevents damage of next tools (in case tool drops from magazine, next tool will not work).
I want to enable this feature in other machines too.
Can anyone help me please?

Setup tips for Eguro gang tool lathe with Fanuc 3T
We're a small machine shop. Our CNC lathe experience is limited to older Okuma CNC lathes. We get a lot of small part orders lately. We picked up an Eguro Nuclet 10 gang tool lathe for almost free. It runs just fine. We're struggling with the gang tool concept. Can anyone give some advice or pointers about how to configure the tool offset (G50?) commands & the absolute zero settings?

ProtoTrak - Why 3 phase and 110V to the same machine?
So I'm reconnecting my little ProtoTrak bed mill, and looking at the label on the electrical box that says "Caution, disconnect Both 110v and 220/440V power before working on this machine". I find myself wondering why this is the only machine I have that is wired like this. We like to move this around the shop as needed and if there was only one connection it would be less work to drop a single line and not have to snake an extension cord to the machine each time, plus that would leave one less cord to clean up around and/or get damaged. I've even been tempted to put a small transformer in the box to make 110, there's plenty of room. The control won't start with only 110 connected, it needs both or the monitor stays dark.
Most machines I have have control transformers to make 110, some only have one to supply an outlet for a trouble light or other tools for a tech. I'm not certain this even meets all NEC rules.
Anyone here know a good reason for this?
And yes I did ask Southwestern once upon a time and got the answer - "It won't run if you don't connect both wires". Duh.

dual contact cat 50 TG100 chucks exist?
do dual contact cat50 TG100 collet chucks exist? ideally around a 3 inch gage line? Nothing covers the range 1/8-1" as well as the tg100 single angle collets in my book..... I am suprised I have not found anybody yet that makes them.

best VFD to spindle wire type
Could one of you sparkie experts educate me.
Hooking up a new VFD to a new spindle. 220V 3-phase. Have two choices of VFD cable. Which is better?
1) four conductors, each insulated, with shield wire
12-3C w/ Ground Shielded VFD Cable | WireAndCableYourWay.com
2) three conductors (insulated) with three shield wires that touch shield the whole length
12-3C w/ 3 #16 Grounds Shielded VFD Cable | WireAndCableYourWay.com
From online reading it sounds like I need to bond the shield to the ground at each end anyway to prevent noise so is that the purpose of the three smaller shield wires that touch the whole length?
Which option above is better for less noise or is there that much difference for a fairly short run (50')?

Citizen/Mitsubishi programming question
I am modifying a program for one part in a family of parts. I will be using a variable for the length that changes based on dash number. Doing so allows me to have one program for all parts. My question is, can I write the values in MC Data from within the program? I attempted to do so from MDI but the machine threw an alarm. I didn't dig too far into it after that as it was time to go home. I would need to change Machining Length and Part Length + Cutoff to suit the different length parts. It's not that big of a deal if MC Data must be changed manually, but it sure would be nice if I could set the value of one variable and have everything taken care of automatically.

Heidenhain 407 tool length issues
Hi
I've only been on this older heidenhain controlled Horizontal Borer for a week.. tnc 407.
The problem I'm having is that the tool length data does not update on the screen.
Basically, if tool length is 11.551 and i traverse to z1, what the screen shows is that axis is sitting at ie... z12.551
Is there some way I can get the screen to show z1 rather than having to do calculations for each tool.
THANKS Dave.
