Endmill Peck Drilling

I do peck drilling in plastic using endmills all the time because 1) it prevents plastic chips from clogging up the flutes if I directly plunge 2) it's one less tool to load and change and set height, etc. I have a Fadal with extended Z, so a tool change takes about 15 seconds.

I've been experimenting with peck drilling in aluminum (using aluminum cutters, MA Ford 138 series to be specific) with pretty good luck so far. I haven't done any formal tests yet in aluminum, but in plastic, I found that it worked best with a super thick chip load and 1/2 diameter pecking distance.

Anyone use peck drilling with an endmill in aluminum or harder materials? I very very rarely just plunge into material, so it's usually either a helix or pre-drill.

Thanks,
Matt
