I am quoting a turning job for a good customer that involves drilling 1.5" deep 6.4mm hole in the end of the part in 304 stainless. Right now I am looking at using a Mitsubishi 2" LOC through coolant carbide drill. One lathe has very good alignment and the other will have to be tweaked a little. Drills were quoted at $125 ea, with resharps running $25 with a 2 week turn. I have a call in to my Mits rep, but it was good Friday and have not heard anything back yet. Right now I use these drill on some aluminum parts that I make and get somewhere around 3/4 of a mile of hole before I have to get them resharpened (7500rpm and 80ipm). Anyone have a feeling on what kind of life I can get on 304 and if there is a better alternative. This is a fairly high volume job that could either make good money or be a big mess if I miss wildly on the drilling part.
