I machine mostly soft plastic (UHMW & HDPE) & some 6061 T-6 AL. Is there a rule of thumb on ramp rates my Cad/Cam program will allow me to choose an angle ramp or distance?
I have always used a distance and more or less just wing it for the distance for example 1/4" bit in HDPE 1 diameter cut depth I ramp in 1" or 4 times the diameter. This has been more of a guess and I am wondering if there is a rule of thumb say X times the diameter or maybe an angle to ramp in that is used?
In UHMW I get a lot of chatter in my ramp area ramping 2" in length 3/8" single flute bit cutting I diameter depth per pass. I make a 4" roller for one of my products. I make them over size and clean up the outside on a manual lathe to clean it up due to the poor finish the worst part of the finish is where it ramps into the cut.
Thanks Mike
