Starting the process of getting all the pieces in place to boot up a CNC machine for our business. I'm leaning towards buying a used Brother or Robodrill. 2006 vintage stuff is coming onto the market at prices ~$35k and this is fitting into our budget (I would buy something newer, but with the first machine comes such a boatload of extra gear (compressor, tooling, fixtures, tumbler... you all know the deal).
Part of the reason I'm liking the Brother/Robodrills is that they are apparently simple, dead to nuts reliable, compact and quick. Downside is that the shops that buy them tend to ride them sorta hard. Given that I'm in Portland, it's likely that any machine I find is gonna not be anywhere close to me. So, a few questions for those of you who know more than I do (which is to say, 99% of you):
1. Can I pay the local guys to go do a remote inspection of one of these things? Do people offer that as a service?
2. What's the worst case scenario? How much of a dud could I wind up with?
3. In super rough numbers, what would I be looking at for new balls crews or spindles or any big ticket stuff?
I know both the Brother and Robodrill are super robust machines, I'm just trying to work out worst-case projections as we start this process.
Thanks!
