Mori-Seiki MV-45 less Y axis travel than stated- How to troubleshoot?

My 1982 MV-45 is supposed to have 450mm (17.710") Y travel per the manual I got with the machine (manual could be for a slightly different machine?). The actual Y travel from OT switch to switch on this machine is 17.150". I could really use the missing 1/2 inch.

I've got the guards off the ways and am getting close to the Y axis switches- They're buried pretty good. When I get to the switches I don't want to mess up their adjustment if they're right. How do I determine where the table travels are supposed to be? Is there a reference point somewhere that can be used to find the center of travels so I don't move a switch allowing too much travel and damaging something?

Also, what kind of lubrication do you guys use on the telescoping way wear pads? They look to have had some thick grease applied long ago, but I don't want any grease to get on the way surfaces.
